What is a 4 day week remote job?
Exactly what you'd hope, you work four days, you get paid as if you worked five, and you do it from home (or wherever you like). Most companies pick a set day off, like Friday, but some let you choose. The catch? There usually isn't one, beyond needing to get your work done in less time.
Do 4 day week jobs pay less than standard full-time roles?
Usually not. Most companies running a 4-day work week follow what's sometimes called the 100-80-100 model: 100% pay, 80% of the hours, 100% of the output. It's worth reading the listing carefully, though, because a few roles are structured as reduced-hours contracts with lower pay to match.
Are 4 day week jobs becoming more common in the UK?
They really are. According to a study by Autonomy and researchers from the University of Cambridge and Boston College, over 90% of the 61 companies that took part in the UK's 2022 four-day week pilot kept the shorter week going a year later, and more than half made it permanent. Tech, marketing, finance, and professional services have been the quickest to adopt it, but it's spreading well beyond those sectors now.
