Engineer - Trust and Safety (Mid Level to Staff Level)

• Join VRChat’s Trust and Safety Tech team as a full-stack engineer in a fully remote role, open anywhere in the world. • Solve real user problems rather than implementing specs, helping users find belonging in a safe, engaging environment. • Build low-friction, scalable moderation, anti-abuse, and safety systems using a Node.js and MongoDB backend with a React frontend. • Help VRChat scale safely, protecting growth and trust by reducing harm with minimal friction. • Treat safety and privacy as first-class design constraints and think adversarially about abuse. • Be considered at levels ranging from mid-level to Staff, depending on experience. • Work flexible hours alongside core hours that support real-time collaboration.

• Bring professional experience developing, building, and maintaining web applications. • Work proficiently across the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) and related technologies such as Redis. • Build scalable RESTful APIs. • Build usable, responsive web front ends using React and CSS or similar technologies. • Bring experience with database design and optimisation, state management, and third-party integrations. • Work with version control systems and CI/CD pipelines. • Bring operational excellence experience, including observability, on-call, incident response, and reliability practices. • Design systems with adversarial users in mind, anticipating abuse vectors, false-positive costs, and graceful degradation. • Handle sensitive user data with appropriate privacy and access controls. • Collaborate with non-engineering partners such as operations, legal, and policy on product trade-offs. • Communicate well and work effectively in a remote, cross-functional team. • Show a genuine interest in online communities, VR, or VRChat as a user or creator. • Pass satisfactory referencing and background checks.

• Bring web development experience in social or gaming contexts. • Understand game client/server architecture and data flow, especially around telemetry or abuse vectors. • Bring experience with Unity and C# for in-game safety UI such as reporting flows. • Bring experience with ML-adjacent systems, including model serving, evaluation, and human-in-the-loop pipelines. • Bring experience working in, or directly with, moderation or Trust and Safety teams. • Bring familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP and containerisation tools such as Docker or Kubernetes.

• Develop, implement, and maintain new features for the VRChat platform and its operations team. • Enhance safety systems and build UI/UX and backend tools for support, moderation, and safety operations. • Balance cost and user privacy in every system you design. • Turn product and design vision into working code through informed trade-offs and accurate estimates. • Contribute across the feature lifecycle, from concept and prototyping to deployment, iteration, and maintenance. • Keep critical moderation and safety services usable, stable, reliable, and performant, joining on-call rotations as needed. • Review code to uphold quality, architectural integrity, performance, and reliability. • Help build a collaborative, iterative, outcome-focused, product-discovery-driven delivery culture.
