Staff Engineer - Recommendations

• Join VRChat’s Social Experience team as a data and ML engineer in a fully remote role, open to candidates anywhere in the world. • Develop and refine the data-driven recommendation systems that help users connect, interact, and discover content and communities. • Build, train, and operationalise personalisation systems using AWS, Python/FastAPI, Node.js, and Snowflake. • Process and transform the large volumes of data generated by a platform with over 250,000 worlds. • Help move VRChat from simple heuristics to sophisticated, data-backed personalisation. • Work within a full-stack team on recommendations, content discovery, groups, and events. • Work flexible hours alongside core hours that support real-time collaboration.

• Bring 3+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on data engineering and scalable backend systems. • Show proven experience building and optimising production-grade ETL/ELT data pipelines. • Bring strong SQL skills and experience optimising databases for analytical queries and high-throughput real-time access. • Bring experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Hadoop/Beam, or Kafka. • Bring experience with cloud providers at scale, such as AWS or Google Cloud. • Work across languages and technologies including Python, JavaScript/Node.js, MongoDB, and Redis. • Bring experience with Elasticsearch, data warehousing, and machine learning systems. • Communicate well and work collaboratively in a remote, cross-functional team. • Pass satisfactory referencing and background checks.

• Bring experience building and scaling content discovery or recommendation systems. • Show a genuine interest in online communities, VR, or VRChat as a user or creator. • Bring experience with social networks, social graphs, or user-generated content systems. • Bring experience working on consumer products, e-commerce, or two-sided marketplaces.

• Develop, maintain, and optimise scalable data pipelines, backend services, and APIs for recommendations, discovery, groups, and events. • Design data models and schemas that support both analytics and real-time recommendation systems. • Work with data scientists, product managers, and engineers to capture, process, and surface the right data. • Implement and maintain large-scale data processing jobs using technologies such as Spark and Kafka. • Evolve VRChat’s personalisation capabilities from heuristics to data-backed models. • Design and build REST and WebSocket APIs, caching systems, queueing systems, and cloud orchestration. • Step in occasionally to help resolve outages.
