Senior Engineering Manager

• Lead as a manager of managers across multiple teams in an org of around 20 to 30 people. • Grow and build new squads as Monzo expands. • Manage direct reports including Tech Leads, Senior Engineers, and two to three Engineering Managers. • Take accountability for the technical and delivery outcomes of your area. • Support and develop best in class engineering talent while creating an inclusive environment for people to do their best work. • Work within cross-functional, autonomous, mission-driven teams that include Product Managers, backend, web and mobile engineers, data scientists, designers, and subject matter experts. • Work in a deliberately shallow line management structure where teams own the decisions relevant to their work. • Work from London, Cardiff, or fully remote within the UK, with no pressure to come into the office.

• Bring experience as a manager with a strong technical and delivery background, having worked as a software engineer previously. • Have directly managed at least two to three Engineering Managers and led orgs of around 20 engineers. • Take accountability for delivery across your squads, collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager. • Foster a high bar for engineering excellence, holding accountability for technical outcomes alongside individual engineer performance and growth. • Articulate your expectations clearly. • Support, coach, and develop your managers through regular 1:1s and continuous feedback. • Partner with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for engineering practices. • Build strong stakeholder relationships with other teams and create focus space for engineers. • Collaborate with the wider engineering organisation on company-wide managerial and technical standards.

• Have built new squads from scratch rather than only inheriting existing teams. • Have worked in a regulated or financial services environment. • Bring experience of a flat organisational structure where teams hold decision-making authority. • Have shaped engineering practices beyond your own org. • Use a preferred name to apply, as Monzo does not need full or birth names at application stage.
