Staff Backend Engineer

• Join Monzo's engineering team of around 650 engineers as a Staff Backend Engineer (L60), working in cross-disciplinary squads to build and support products used by millions of customers. • Work across collectives including Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security, and Expansion — many with machine learning and AI at the forefront. • Build on a stack of Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy Proxy, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS, with two physical datacentre sites. • Work remotely from anywhere in the UK or from Monzo's London office, with flexible working hours and no mandated office attendance.

• Have strong experience working on the backend of a technology product. • Have a product mindset — care about customer outcomes and want to make data-informed decisions. • Be comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity. • Be interested in distributed systems and writing resilient software. • Have some experience with strongly typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala.

• Have direct experience with Go for backend application development. • Bring experience working with Cassandra, Kafka, or similar distributed data and messaging systems. • Have experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS infrastructure. • Bring prior experience in fintech, banking, or financial services engineering. • Have experience contributing to open-source software.

• Collaborate across disciplines in a squad alongside product managers, marketers, user researchers, designers, mobile engineers, web engineers, data analysts, business analysts, and writers. • Build and support a particular part of Monzo within one of the wider collectives. • Work on the backend of Monzo's technology product using Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy Proxy, Kubernetes, and AWS. • Test hypotheses and make a difference to customers through data-informed decision-making. • Contribute to knowledge-sharing sessions across the company.
