• Shape how Borrowing builds and uses data at scale, reporting to the Borrowing Data Director.
• Work across Borrowing, one of Monzo's most complex and fastest-growing domains, spanning 12+ products across multiple geographies and 1,700+ data models.
• Join in the middle of a major data architecture transformation, with expansion into new markets and a new generation of data infrastructure being built.
• Partner across product, credit, engineering, Data Platform, and analytics engineering to turn complex technical problems into clearer systems and better business decisions.
• Lead through influence rather than line management, multiplying the impact of analytics engineers across the domain.
• Work from London, Cardiff, or fully remote within the UK, with ad hoc meetings in London.
📋 Job Requirements
• Think in systems rather than queries, having designed data architectures spanning multiple products or domains and kept them coherent as they scale.
• Turn ambiguous problems into a clear technical direction, delivery sequence, and set of trade-offs.
• Have built data products rather than just data models, defining SLAs, contracts, interfaces, or ownership models for data consumers.
• Bring deep fluency with analytics engineering systems and infrastructure, including dbt at scale, BigQuery or equivalent, CI/CD for data, testing frameworks, and orchestration.
• Have hit the scaling limits of those tools and know what to do about them.
• Design reusable feature layers serving ML pipelines, dashboards, decisioning engines, and regulatory reporting, understanding the trade-offs between freshness, cost, granularity, correctness, and ease of use.
• Work comfortably at the platform boundary, discussing ingestion patterns, streaming versus batch, schema evolution, and infrastructure costs with Data Platform engineers.
• Connect technical choices to business outcomes, using context from product, credit, engineering, and operational teams to align people around better decisions.
• Lead through others by setting patterns, reviewing designs, unblocking teams, and raising the standard rather than being the single expert.
• Communicate across altitudes, whiteboarding architecture with a backend engineer and presenting a strategic roadmap to a director.
• Care about credit products and the complexity of lending, including risk, affordability, regulatory constraints, and multi-product dynamics.
🌟 Nice-to-have
• Bring hands-on experience with lending or credit data specifically, though curiosity about the domain is enough.
• Have designed feature stores serving multiple downstream consumers in production.
• Have shaped developer experience and tooling for a data organisation of 80 or more people.
• Have worked on data models spanning multiple geographies or regulatory regimes.
• Use a preferred name to apply, as Monzo does not need full or birth names at application stage.
🎯 Responsibilities
• Architect Borrowing's data layer at scale, shaping how 1,700+ models across 12+ products are structured, connected, and evolved.
• Set shared patterns that help teams build trusted, consistent, scalable data products across Borrowing.
• Design and govern data products, moving beyond ad-hoc tables toward contractual data assets with clear ownership, SLAs, documentation, and interfaces.
• Define what makes a Borrowing dataset production-grade and consumable by analytics, ML, decisioning, and regulatory teams.
• Build feature stores and reusable analytical assets, identifying cross-product signals such as credit behaviour, repayment patterns, affordability, and risk indicators that should be modelled once and consumed by many.
• Scale the analytics engineering infrastructure, shaping tooling, patterns, and developer experience for an 80+ person credit and data organisation.
• Partner with the central Data Platform team so Borrowing's needs are reflected in ingestion, streaming, and schema contract design.
• Drive cross-product data consistency as the domain expands across geographies and product lines.
• Act as senior technical partner across backend engineering, product measurement strategy, credit decisioning data, and senior leadership.
