About the role

💼 What you will do

• Join around 60 Analytics Engineers within a data function of roughly 300 practitioners, working on a discipline Monzo has big ambitions for. • Build downstream data models from backend services, mostly in BigQuery, to make the Data Warehouse a genuine competitive advantage. • Support internal reporting, machine learning, and financial and regulatory use cases. • Work collaboratively with product, engineering, and data science, with regular knowledge-sharing sessions covering everything from data modelling principles to how banks work. • Focus on the Business Banking product and the data models behind it. • Take part in out-of-hours on call support from time to time, since teams own and support the pipelines they contribute to. • Work from London, Cardiff, or fully remote within the UK, with ad hoc meetings in London.

📋 Job Requirements

• Enjoy working with cross-functional, fast-moving teams and care about serving small businesses. • Think strategically about the Business Banking product and how the underlying data models unlock insights and customer value. • Bring a strong passion for data modelling, ETL projects, and Big Data. • Work comfortably with data streams from financial, transactional, and operational systems. • Treat SQL and data modelling as second nature, with solid general Data Warehousing knowledge. • Commit to continuous improvement, proactively spotting opportunities and addressing challenges in your work and that of others. • Take part in out-of-hours on call support from time to time.

🌟 Nice-to-have

• Bring experience working within a finance function or knowledge of accounting. • Have worked in a highly regulated environment such as finance, gaming, food, or health care. • Know regulatory reporting and treasury operations in retail banking. • Bring exposure to Python, Go, or similar languages. • Have worked with orchestration frameworks such as Airflow or Luigi. • Have used dbt, dataform, or similar tooling. • Work comfortably in AGILE ways of working such as Kanban or Scrum.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Support the building of robust data models downstream of backend services that serve internal reporting, machine learning, and financial and regulatory needs. • Optimise the Data Warehouse, spotting opportunities to reduce complexity and cost. • Help define and manage best practices covering payload design of source data, logical data modelling, implementation, metadata, and testing standards. • Set standards and ways of working with data across Monzo, collaborating with others to make it happen. • Apply established best practices and standards within other areas of the business. • Investigate and work with colleagues from other disciplines to monitor and improve data quality within the warehouse. • Contribute to prioritisation of data governance issues.
