Senior / Staff Backend Engineer (API) – Economy

• Join VRChat’s Economy team in a fully remote backend engineering role, open to candidates anywhere in the world. • Architect and evolve the systems that power how creators earn and how users transact across VRChat globally. • Build high-integrity backend infrastructure for subscriptions, digital ownership, creator monetisation, payments, and economic analytics. • Work primarily in Node.js and TypeScript on systems where correctness, auditability, reliability, and compliance are non-negotiable. • Help scale VRC+ subscriptions, marketplaces, digital credits and wallets, creator payouts, and reconciliation. • Be considered at Senior or Staff level, depending on experience. • Work flexible hours with core collaboration overlap on a team that values work-life integration.

• Bring 5+ years of backend engineering experience in SaaS, fintech, marketplaces, or online platforms. • Bring deep proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript. • Bring strong experience with relational and non-relational databases, including MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis. • Manage message queues, caching strategies, and WebSocket systems confidently. • Show proven experience building and maintaining external integrations with payment vendors and fintech platforms. • Understand profiling, optimisation trade-offs, and observability. • Bring experience operating under PCI DSS, GDPR, and PII requirements. • Bring experience building subscription engines, marketplaces, accounting systems, or invoicing workflows. • Bring familiarity with AWS, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code. • Navigate ambiguity across experimental and high-certainty requirements in complex, evolving codebases. • Work as a low-ego, high-ownership self-starter who stays calm during critical incidents. • Pass satisfactory referencing and background checks.

• Bring credible experience designing and operating financial or high-integrity transactional systems at scale to be considered at Staff level. • Bring experience with event-driven or high-throughput transactional systems. • Bring experience integrating with Steam, Oculus, Apple, or Google Play payment systems. • Bring experience leading large-scale refactors or architectural migrations. • Bring experience building internal operational tooling or creator-facing systems. • Bring full-stack development experience. • Take part actively in creator economies or VRChat itself.

• Design and implement scalable backend services in Node.js and TypeScript. • Ensure transactional integrity across high-volume economic systems. • Model digital ownership, entitlements, wallets, and payouts for first-party and creator-driven content. • Design reliable economic event representations and ensure traceability across payments and reporting. • Maintain reconciliation accuracy and enable subscription and marketplace analytics. • Contribute to fraud detection and prevention systems. • Own services from development through deployment and monitoring, improving CI/CD reliability and release safety. • Work in containerised environments and contribute to Infrastructure as Code. • Strengthen observability, monitoring, and incident response, and help resolve critical production issues. • Lead architectural initiatives, mentor engineers, and influence cross-team design decisions. • Partner with Product, Design, Data, Finance, Trust & Safety, and Infrastructure teams.
