Engineer - Trust and Safety

Posted on 5 August 2026

About the role

💼 What you will do

• Join the Trust and Safety Tech team as a full-stack engineer, discovering, developing, and refining internal and external functionality that ensures users can find belonging within a safe, engaging environment. • Help VRChat scale safely by building low-friction, scalable moderation, anti-abuse, and safety systems across Node.js/Mongo backend and React frontend. • Hire at Mid Level through to Staff Level, solving real user problems rather than implementing specs.

📋 Job Requirements

• Hold professional experience developing, building, and maintaining web applications, preferably in social or gaming contexts. • Be proficient in the MERN stack including MongoDB, Express, React, and Node.js, plus related technologies like Redis. • Build scalable RESTful APIs and usable, responsive web front ends using React and CSS. • Have experience with database design and optimisation, state management, and third-party integrations. • Design systems with adversarial users in mind, anticipating abuse vectors, false-positive costs, and graceful degradation. • Handle sensitive user data with appropriate privacy and access controls. • Demonstrate experience with operational excellence including observability, on-call, incident response, and reliability practices for production systems. • Collaborate comfortably with non-engineering partners such as operations, legal, and policy on product trade-offs. • Show a demonstrated interest in online communities, VR, or VRChat as a user or creator.

🌟 Nice-to-have

• Bring understanding of game client/server architecture and data flow, especially relating to telemetry or abuse vectors. • Have experience with Unity/C# for in-game safety UI surfaces like reporting flows. • Show experience with ML-adjacent systems including model serving, evaluation, and human-in-the-loop pipelines. • Hold experience working in or directly with moderation or Trust and Safety teams. • Demonstrate familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP and containerisation with Docker or Kubernetes.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Work within a full-stack team to develop, implement, and maintain new features for the VRChat platform and operational team. • Build the UI/UX and backend systems for support, moderation, and safety operations with consideration for cost and user privacy. • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate product and design vision into functional code through informed trade-offs. • Contribute to all stages of the feature lifecycle from initial concept and prototyping to deployment and post-launch iteration. • Ensure the usability, stability, reliability, and performance of critical moderation and safety services, participating in on-call rotations as needed. • Participate in code reviews to maintain a high bar for code quality, architectural integrity, performance, and reliability. • Contribute to a culture of collaborative, iterative, outcome-focused, product-discovery-driven delivery.
