Software Engineer, Compute

• Work on the compute infrastructure behind everything Vercel runs, where humans and agents deploy more than 6 million times a day, spin up over 2 million Sandboxes, and serve a trillion requests a month. • Join the Persistence team within Vercel's Compute division, which owns the deep infrastructure inside Hive, the compute platform, focusing on storage and state for builds, sandboxes, and functions. • Help redefine compute through features like Fluid Compute, Persistent Sandboxes, and Custom Images. • Work on infrastructure running hundreds of instances across every region where customers deploy code, rethinking low-level primitives and contributing to platform features used by thousands of developers daily. • Be based in London, working from the office on anchor days if you live within commuting distance, or fully remotely if you are elsewhere in the UK.

• Have 5+ years of software engineering experience. • Bring deep experience with virtual machines, file systems, and Linux, enjoying knowing how things work under the hood with tools like tcpdump, strace, and iptables. • Have built and operated distributed systems at scale, designing for performance and reliability. • Have experience with schedulers and orchestrators for containerised and non-containerised workloads, such as Nomad or Kubernetes. • Solve problems and communicate excellently, with genuine enthusiasm for digging into problems that lack obvious solutions. • Be willing to take part in on-call coverage for the compute platform.

• Have strong Golang experience, the language used daily on this team. • Have worked on low-level virtualisation or sandbox execution environments. • Have product engineering experience and care about the developer-facing impact of infrastructure decisions. • Have run on-call operations for large-scale distributed systems. • Have used Terraform to provision infrastructure.

• Manage and improve the fleet of clusters, running hundreds of instances deployed in every region where customers deploy and run code. • Write Golang daily and use Terraform to provision infrastructure, working with Nomad as the scheduler for managing workloads. • Rethink the primitives of the infrastructure, working with virtual filesystems, Linux primitives, and low-level virtualisation. • Own the reliability and performance of the compute platform, including on-call coverage, on a team where every improvement has outsized impact at scale. • Collaborate across teams to drive the convergence of all compute at Vercel.
