Senior Staff Backend Engineer

• Take on a hands-on engineering leadership role as an individual contributor at L70 on Monzo's Engineering Progression Framework. • Provide technical leadership across multiple squads, spanning 30 to 70+ engineers within a collective. • Partner with Engineering Directors to shape the technical and product direction of that collective. • Stay hands on in both coding and architecture, leading from the front. • Join around 650 engineers out of roughly 5,500 people in total, with scope to move between teams or specialise. • Work directly with anyone across the company, with regular knowledge-sharing sessions covering everything from how banks work to effective communication. • Work from London, Cardiff, or fully remote within the UK, with no mandated office attendance.

• Bring a track record of leading complex, high-impact systems and driving technical direction across multiple teams. • Combine strong technical judgment with product and business awareness, making pragmatic trade-offs. • Have worked on scalable backend, distributed, or data-intensive systems. • Operate comfortably in ambiguous problem spaces, helping teams define direction and execute. • Influence and align senior stakeholders across engineering, product, and beyond. • Care about outcomes and impact, using data to guide decisions. • Enjoy mentoring and raising the bar for other engineers.

• Have worked with Monzo's stack, including Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, GCP, React, and Feast. • Have built or scaled feature stores and the tooling around training and deploying models. • Have worked in a regulated or financial services environment. • Have contributed to open source software, which Monzo does as much as possible. • Use a preferred name to apply, as Monzo does not need full or birth names at application stage.

• Partner with Engineering Directors to shape technical and product direction across a collective, keeping it aligned with company-wide priorities. • Partner with Product and Design leadership to define strategy, shape roadmaps, and make high-quality trade-offs that maximise business and customer impact. • Mobilise teams around high-impact problems, creating clarity, alignment, and momentum, injecting urgency when needed or slowing things down for safety and long-term sustainability. • Lead and influence architectural direction for the most complex systems, keeping designs cohesive and scalable across multiple teams. • Align local technical decisions with the broader system strategy. • Set and uphold a high bar for technical excellence, driving improvements in quality, reliability, and scalability. • Foster a culture where engineers hold each other to that standard. • Mentor, sponsor, and develop senior engineers and future leaders, multiplying your impact by enabling others to operate at a higher level.
