About the role

💼 What you will do

• Support Monzo's payments business, covering digital assets and emerging payment technologies. • Report to Monzo's Director of Legal for Payments & Business Banking as part of the Legal and Board Governance Collective. • Act as legal business partner for the teams working on these initiatives. • Help teams navigate a rapidly evolving legal and regulatory landscape so Monzo innovates responsibly while protecting customers. • Work at all levels with Product Managers, Designers, Operations professionals, Software Engineers, and Risk, FinCrime, and Compliance colleagues. • Take opportunities to work within a team of product lawyers supporting Monzo's Product Collectives more broadly, including personal and business banking. • Work from the London office, with non-London arrangements discussed case by case.

📋 Job Requirements

• Bring a minimum of five years of relevant post-qualification experience as a technically excellent lawyer. • Bring recent experience of digital assets, emerging financial technologies, and the evolving regulatory regime. • Advise on laws and regulations relevant to financial services, including the UK regulatory regime as it applies to digital assets and emerging payment technologies. • Assess risk and recommend solutions that balance commercial and risk considerations. • Think ahead, anticipate challenges, understand the commercial objectives of the teams you support, and set clear objectives. • Stay proactive, taking the initiative to broaden your knowledge. • Bring passion for the intersection of banking and technology and the transformation unfolding in consumer finance. • Work comfortably in a fast-paced environment.

• Bring experience across both UK and EU regulatory regimes, since the role works with colleagues in both. • Have managed relationships with external law firms and suppliers, including cost management. • Have identified and implemented technology solutions that streamlined legal workflows. • Have delivered training and knowledge sharing to non-legal colleagues. • Use a preferred name to apply, as Monzo does not need full or birth names at application stage.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Partner with product managers to advise on legal matters, especially the impact of digital assets and emerging financial technologies, and the legal and regulatory requirements that follow. • Develop efficient ways of working that let Monzo scale quickly while operating safely and lawfully. • Provide training and knowledge sharing with other Monzonauts on how laws and regulations affect Monzo and its customers. • Act as the sole lawyer advising product managers and colleagues, identifying legal issues proactively and finding effective solutions to complex business activities. • Work closely with the Director of Legal for Payments & Business Banking, the Director of Product Legal, the General Counsel, and the wider UK Legal team. • Act as a trusted advisor across Product, Risk & Compliance, Supplier Operations, Financial Crime, Fraud, and Operations. • Advise on the evolving legal and regulatory framework for digital assets, working with colleagues across the UK and EU to apply local requirements to Monzo's products. • Improve how the Legal and Board Governance Collective manages its activities, including through technology that streamlines workflows and increases scalability. • Manage relationships with external suppliers and law firms, optimising spend while keeping legal support top quality.
