Posted on 24 August 2026

About the role

💼 What you will do

• Join the second line of defence Credit Model Validation team, growing alongside Monzo's rapidly expanding lending portfolio. • Provide independent oversight and challenge to model development teams in the first line of defence, helping Monzo grow safely. • Deliver expert validation across the suite of credit models, covering critical disciplines such as credit strategy and impairment. • Focus particularly on models used for customer-level decisioning and defining credit strategies, including underwriting scorecards, origination PD models, and Net Present Value and unit economics models across all lending products. • Lead the adoption of AI tools to enhance the model validation approach. • Work from London, Cardiff, or distributed within the UK, with ad hoc meetings in London.

📋 Job Requirements

• Bring a strong background and practical experience in credit model development or validation. • Bring exposure to machine learning or statistical models used in credit decisioning, such as decision science scorecards, origination and underwriting PD models, and NPV or unit economics modelling. • Work data-driven with strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of statistical techniques for credit and model risk. • Get hands on with data, with strong SQL and Python skills as essentials. • Understand how models are used in real-time decisioning and lending strategies, and how to balance commercial and risk outcomes. • Communicate strongly in writing and speech, breaking down complex issues for non-experts in clear, simple language. • Show a track record of building trusting relationships with stakeholders at all levels while providing effective, respectful challenge. • Stay impact-driven and proactive in identifying issues and opportunities that improve outcomes for customers and the business. • Bring hands-on experience using Python to develop, validate, or analyse machine learning and statistical models in a financial services environment.

🌟 Nice-to-have

• Bring in-depth knowledge of credit decisioning models, which Monzo describes as a strong plus. • Have used data visualisation tools such as Tableau or Looker. • Have worked on IFRS9, stress testing, or economic response models. • Have used any of Monzo's stack, including Google Cloud Platform, dbt, BigQuery SQL, Python, Go, or AWS, though prior experience of all is not expected. • Use a preferred name to apply, as Monzo does not need full or birth names at application stage.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Lead hands-on independent validation of models used for credit decisioning within the Borrowing strategies, covering machine learning, decision science, and NPV models. • Make sure models are fit for purpose, appropriately governed, explainable, and performing as expected. • Support oversight and validation of broader credit risk models, including IFRS9, stress testing, and economic response models. • Develop deep understanding of the credit models and use it to challenge model developers and improve modelling capabilities. • Review ongoing model performance monitoring so lending models stay within risk thresholds, supporting first line teams when action is needed. • Perform statistical analyses to assess model performance independently, developing challenger models where appropriate to test assumptions. • Improve the Model Risk Framework, overseeing policies, standards, and procedures so best practice is embedded and regulatory guidelines stay current. • Write clear model validation reports and present findings and actions in relevant committees. • Partner with first line credit strategy and modelling teams and wider risk teams to embed the model risk framework and establish consistent validation standards.
