Experienced Software Engineer

• Care and often obsess over the quality and the details of your work. • Find debugging any problem a fun challenge rather than a chore. • Understand the layers of abstraction below and above your work as how you operate rather than something extra. • Have production experience with several programming languages, frameworks, and paradigms, and be comfortable with the idea of becoming an expert in PHP and JavaScript even if you are not already one. • Associate abstraction as much with cost as with value. • Have experience working at scale, whether on the backend and performance side or via the complexity of interacting with a multi-million diverse user base. • Be open and able to travel 3–4 weeks per year to meet up with teammates in person.

• Have existing expertise in PHP and JavaScript. • Have experience with AI-powered product development and AI-assisted development workflows. • Have experience with WordPress, WooCommerce, or similar open-source platforms. • Have experience with e-commerce platforms or content management systems at scale.

• Work across Automattic's product ecosystem including WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Gutenberg, and AI-powered product developments. • Ship often, deploying many times daily with the help of peer code review, continuous integration, and a global workforce. • Collaborate across many communication channels as part of a distributed, global team. • Contribute to open-source projects that power 43% of the web. • Help build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on building useful products.
