Senior Software Engineer I - Global KYC and Onboarding - Java

• Join the Global KYC and Onboarding squad in the Servicing department, which lets teams across Wise expand and fine-tune the business in a config change manner while staying compliant and safe for customers. • Work in one of three teams covering Business Onboarding Verification, Personal Onboarding Verification, and Wise Platform Verification. • Operate at real scale: in FY2025, 15.6 million people and businesses used Wise, 5.9 million new customers were onboarded at around 500k a month, and £145.2bn moved across borders across 160+ countries and 40+ currencies. • Treat verification systems as core production infrastructure rather than supporting tools, keeping them reliable under constant regulatory, policy, and threat change. • Own the entire verification lifecycle, from document collection flows and automated review systems through to agent tooling and compliance monitoring. • Help build KYC and FinCrime as a configuration-driven product, refactoring into scalable microservices and increasing automation with ML and AI where it genuinely improves decisioning. • Turn a traditionally frustrating experience into one that is fast, intuitive, and fair for customers. • Work from London on a hybrid basis, with the interview process used to match you to the right team in the squad.

• Bring 4+ years working with Java 8+, the Spring framework, and asynchronous message queues such as Kafka or RabbitMQ. • Have architected and built highly scalable microservices. • Bring a strong product mindset and deep interest in both customer experience and regulatory compliance. • Prioritise with a holistic view of customer and business impact, making data-driven decisions on complex, ambiguous problems. • Articulate complex technical and architectural concepts clearly to product managers, designers, and other engineering teams. • Write clean, testable, maintainable, and highly performant code, advocating for best practice and rigorous code reviews. • Show proven ability to lead technical delivery of large-scale, organisationally complex projects, anticipating and escalating blockers. • Bring extensive experience with relational and non-relational databases, including advanced query optimisation, schema design, and data lifecycle management for sensitive information.

• Bring experience of KYC, FinCrime, or regulated verification systems. • Apply ML or AI to decisioning and review quality with safe fallbacks and clear observability. • Bring experience of building configuration-driven products that non-engineers can safely adjust. • Mentor other engineers and share best practice beyond your own team. • Bring frontend or mobile experience to a squad that spans backend, frontend, mobile, design, and analytics. • Enjoy innovating in a space traditionally resistant to change.

• Own large, impactful projects within the domain end to end. • Own the technical roadmap for your areas, addressing technical debt, reliability, scalability, and security. • Design and implement robust backend systems that expose clean APIs and hide internal complexity. • Drive integration with various risk and mitigation systems so Wise stays compliant. • Identify and solve impactful problems inside your team and beyond, contributing to cross-team initiatives. • Own and deliver quarterly goals that improve Wise’s ability to scale verification processes. • Drive tough prioritisation decisions on ambiguous, open-ended problems. • Define technical solutions and operational processes that level up your team, mentoring engineers and sharing best practice. • Build a high-performing environment where ideas are shared and continuous learning is expected.
