Senior Systems Engineer

• Deliver high availability, performance, and security for tens of billions of page views and over a billion web surfers each month from 30 private data centres in 30 locations on 6 continents. • Join a small, vertically integrated Systems team with a unique opportunity to participate in all aspects of infrastructure management for the platform behind WordPress.com, Tumblr, WooCommerce, and more. • Help develop, build, and maintain a leading global infrastructure and share learnings with the world.

• Have maintained large Nginx setups with advanced routing configuration, load balancing, reliable performance, and high availability. • Have run very large MySQL/MariaDB deployments while maintaining an unparalleled level of performance, uptime, and data integrity. • Have experience running and debugging PHP applications at scale. • Understand the relationship of these services with the lower-level systems stacks including filesystems, network, memory management, and kernel internals. • Have deep operational and maintenance experience with very large and complex public-facing web hosting systems. • Be able to autonomously architect, prototype, and maintain solutions to different problems and hosting requirements. • Possess extreme attention to detail and strive for unparalleled operational excellence. • Be open and available for 2–3 weeks of travel per year to meet up with teammates in person.

• Have experience with infrastructure spanning multiple data centres across different continents. • Have experience with proactive monitoring, real-time incident response, and maintaining data integrity and backups for disaster recovery. • Have experience optimising both server-side and client-side performance at massive scale. • Have experience removing friction for developers and providing rapid support to unblock software shipping.

• Maximise the availability and uptime of all services through proactive planning, sound architectural decisions, automation, and rapid response to failures. • Make Automattic services as fast as possible for users through optimisation of server-side and client-side interactions and work with third-party services where necessary. • Ensure services are safe and secure for both users and employees through a combination of proactive monitoring and enforcement, real-time response, and maintaining data integrity and backups to allow recovery from disasters. • Remove as much friction as possible between Automattic developers and their goal of shipping software, providing answers usually in a matter of minutes.
